Image of God: Function, Not Attributes

"Whoever sheds man's blood, his blood will be shed by man, for God made man in his own image" (Genesis 9:6). This command comes immediately after the flood, when humanity's own violence had just brought judgment on the earth — and the reason given for why murder carries such weight is not that the victim was intelligent, useful, or morally impressive. It is that the victim bore the image.
That single distinction carries enormous ethical weight once it is taken seriously. If the image of God is a function — an office of representation conferred on every human being simply by being human — rather than a set of inner qualities like reasoning ability, moral awareness, or self-consciousness, then no one can be excluded from bearing it on the basis of what they can or cannot do. The unborn child, someone whose mind will never develop the capacities we usually associate with reasoning, the elderly mind clouded by age, the newborn who has demonstrated nothing yet at all — none of them qualify for the image by passing some test of capacity, because the image was never a test to pass. That status was assigned once, at creation, and nothing anyone does or fails to do can strip it away. This grounds human dignity in vocation and divine appointment rather than in achievement, and it applies with the same force to the person no one is watching as to the person everyone admires. Contempt for any human being, on this reading, is not merely bad manners; it is, in principle, an act of contempt against the very one that person represents.
This is precisely the contradiction James exposes when believers use their mouths for two opposite purposes: "With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God" (James 3:9). The logic is devastatingly simple — one cannot genuinely honor the King while degrading those he has personally commissioned to represent him. Every face carries a crown that no circumstance can strip away.
