Grace kills religious pride

Ezekiel 16:3 dismantles any illusion of spiritual superiority for Jerusalem. The Lord God reminds them that their very beginnings were intertwined with the surrounding nations. From its very birth, it was immersed in the same spiritual landscape as the people it often disdained.
This stark reminder serves to crush religious pride. God is laying bare the truth: Israel was not chosen because it was naturally holier or more righteous than any other people. Their origin story, far from being pristine, was one of spiritual compromise and defilement. This emphasizes that God's covenant with them, and His faithfulness to them, was—and always has been—an act of pure, unadulterated grace. He chose them, not because of who they were, but because of who He is.
This truth remains vital for us today. Grace leaves no room for religious arrogance or the belief that we are somehow inherently better than others.
