God Judged Ancient World and Cities

“if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly.” We see a sober reminder here of God's unyielding justice. His covenant faithfulness extends not only to those He saves but also to His righteous judgment against sin. This passage emphasizes that God's past actions serve as a definitive warning for all subsequent generations. 
These ancient events are not mere historical footnotes but canonical precedents. The flood in Genesis 6-9 obliterated a world consumed by wickedness, demonstrating God's ultimate authority over creation and His intolerance for pervasive evil. Similarly, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 18-19, due to their profound immorality and lack of hospitality, underscored God's commitment to moral order. Both narratives, understood deeply by a Second Temple audience, established a pattern: deliberate and unrepentant sin inevitably incurs divine wrath. 
What are we to do with such powerful warnings? We do not live in fear, but in reverent awe of God's holiness and justice. These examples should stir in us a profound discernment, urging us to walk in paths of righteousness and to actively flee from the temptations of ungodliness. They also ground our hope; if God is so steadfast in judgment, He is equally steadfast in His promises of salvation and preservation for those who walk in His ways. Our worship is deepened by acknowledging both His loving-kindness and His righteous indignation against all that defies Him.
