Ezekiel 21:21-22 offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient world and God's absolute sovereignty. Nebuchadnezzar, the mighty king of Babylon, stood at a crossroads, literally and figuratively. He was deciding which path to take his formidable army: towards Ammon or Jerusalem. As a pagan king, he employed the typical methods of divination of his era. He "shook the arrows," a common practice involving casting arrows marked with different city names and then observing which way they fell. He "consulted teraphim," household idols or images often used for guidance. He "looked at the liver" of sacrificed animals, where priests would interpret omens from its appearance. These were deeply ingrained pagan practices, believed to reveal the will of the gods.
The crucial insight here is not found in the effectiveness of these pagan rituals, but in their divinely orchestrated outcome. Despite Nebuchadnezer's pagan methods, the "lot for Jerusalem" ultimately fell into his right hand. This was not random chance, nor was it the power of his false gods. The prophet Ezekiel reveals that God Himself guided the outcome of these superstitions to accomplish His sovereign will. Jerusalem was marked for judgment because of its persistent unfaithfulness. God used the pagan king and his methods as instruments in His hand, directing even their superstitious practices to bring about His purposes. This demonstrates God's ultimate authority over all nations and their leaders, even those who do not acknowledge Him.
For us today, this passage provides profound encouragement and a call to trust. We often observe world events, political shifts, and personal circumstances that seem chaotic or driven by ungodly forces. Ezekiel's words remind us that God remains on His throne. Even when leaders make decisions based on human wisdom, self-interest, or even practices contrary to God's commands, His overarching purpose prevails. We can take heart knowing that our heavenly Father is not surprised or thwarted by world events. He is actively guiding history towards His ultimate conclusion. Our call is to remain faithful, knowing that He rules over all, orchestrating even the seemingly mundane or malevolent actions of humans to achieve His divine plan.
