God as Trinity: Where the Doctrine Meets Its Limit

A fitting place to end this series, because it takes us back to where it started.
The textual evidence clearly demonstrates the deity of Christ and of the Holy Spirit alongside God the Father. The same Scriptures equally affirm the unity of God. Both sets of texts are plain. The question was never whether the Bible teaches these things.
The difficulty is how to understand a three-person Godhead - and early Christians genuinely struggled to articulate what is ultimately inscrutable. That word is important. Not unclear. Not poorly evidenced. Inscrutable: it cannot be searched out to the bottom.
Which means the Trinity is one of the more obvious places where the incomprehensibility of God shows. We met that attribute earlier in this series: God cannot be measured or completely understood in his nature and his ways, though what he has revealed is genuinely true.
So the right posture at the end of a series on the attributes of God is not mastery. It is the same combination we started with - real confidence about what he has shown, and no pretence about having reached the bottom of him.
