The Attributes of God: Immutability

Immutability refers to God being unchangeable, and for that reason unchanging. The order matters. He does not simply happen to stay the same. He is the kind of being who cannot be otherwise.
Scripture puts this forward quite directly in several places. God says of himself that he does not change. Balaam's oracle says God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. James says that with the Father of lights there is no variation or shadow due to change.
It is worth being clear about what this does not mean. It does not mean God is frozen, inert, or unmoved by anything. Scripture has him responding, grieving, relenting and rejoicing. What does not change is who he is - his character, his nature and his promises. A God whose character could drift would be a God whose promises came with an expiry date.
That is the practical weight of this attribute. The reason a promise made thousands of years ago still stands is not that God has kept his word so far. It is that he cannot become someone who would not.
