The Attributes of God: Independence (Aseity)

Independence expresses the idea that God is entirely self-sufficient. He requires nothing external to himself for his existence or his well-being.
Theologians also call this self-sufficiency, or aseity - a word that comes from the Latin a se, meaning from himself. Some use aseity more narrowly to say God has no external origin. Either way, the short version is the same: God needs nothing in order to be God.
Paul says it directly in Athens. The God who made the world and everything in it does not live in temples built by human hands, and is not served by human hands as though he needed anything - since he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.
Then notice the reverse, which is just as important. God depends on nothing; everything depends on God. The existence and the upkeep of all things rests on him. He is not a being who needs our support. We are beings who would not last a moment without his.
