The Name Yahweh: Why Not Jehovah

Jehovah is not a name anyone in the Bible used. It is the fossil of a scribal habit.
Out of reverence, scribes would not pronounce the divine name. But they still had to write it. So they wrote its four consonants and slotted in the vowels of a different word - adonay, "Lord" - as a visual reminder that adonay was what you said aloud. The written form was never meant to be pronounced as it stood. It was an instruction.
Later readers who did not know this read the hybrid as an actual word, and it entered English as Jehovah. The J is a German spelling convention where j sounds like an English y. So the form is a misreading wearing a German coat: four consonants of one word, vowels of another, pronounced by no Israelite ever.
This is also why your English Bible prints LORD in small capitals. That is not a translation of the name. It is the same reverence, carried into English - a substitute standing where the name is.
