Gehenna's Fiery Imagery

By Jesus' time, this valley had become the city's incinerator, a place where refuse, animal carcasses, and even the bodies of executed criminals were burned. The continuous fires and the presence of maggots devouring decay made Gehenna a vivid symbol of destruction, putrefaction, and ceaseless punitive judgment. Jesus’ choice of this specific place name would have immediately conjured images of utter contamination and finality for his Jewish listeners.
