Gehenna Is Not Hades

The Apostle Peter writes, "God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness..." (2 Peter 2:4 ESV). The English word "hell" here is a translation of the Greek word "Tartarus," which appears only this one time in the Bible. This is crucial: Tartarus is distinctly different from Hades and Gehenna, often all translated simply as "hell." Peter uses Tartarus to describe a specific, temporary holding place for a certain class of fallen angels, implying a pre-judgment confinement rather than the final, eternal state of punishment.
In Greek mythology, Tartarus was a deep abyss used as a dungeon of torment and suffering for the wicked and rebellious gods (the Titans). The Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) uses the verb "tartaroo" in Job 40:20 (in some manuscripts), further indicating its association with a place of deep darkness. By invoking this term, Peter draws upon a concept familiar to his Greek-speaking audience, signifying a unique place of restraint for angelic beings before a future judgment, much like a maximum-security prison holding offenders awaiting trial. This is not the general unseen realm of the dead (Hades) nor the ultimate lake of fire (Gehenna).
Understanding Peter's deliberate choice of "Tartarus" enriches our theology of divine judgment and the afterlife. It teaches us that God's justice is meticulous, with specific fates for different rebellious beings. This nuance encourages us to worship God not only for His mercy but also for His sovereign order and righteous judgment, inspiring confidence that every act of rebellion, whether human or angelic, will be met with a perfectly tailored consequence. It also calls us to discern scripture carefully, recognizing that not all terms translated as "hell" describe the same theological reality.
