Gehenna Is Currently Empty

In Matthew 25:41, Jesus declares, "Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels." In Old Testament times, it became infamous as a site where pagan rituals, including child sacrifice, were performed (Jeremiah 7:31). Later, by Second Temple Judaism, Gehenna had transformed in Jewish thought into a metaphorical place of purification or punishment, often associated with intense heat and waste. It was colloquially used for a refuse dump where fires constantly burned, consuming the city's garbage and impurities, thereby becoming a vivid symbol of destruction and utter defilement.
