Gehenna: A Metaphor for Evil

“And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.” James 3:6 describes the destructive power of the tongue in stark terms, likening it to a raging inferno. This verse emphasizes that the tongue possesses an inherent capacity for evil, capable of corrupting and consuming every aspect of our existence. It suggests that our words, once unleashed, can initiate a chain reaction of devastation that impacts not only ourselves but also those around us.
The word translated as “hell” in this passage is Gehenna, which refers to the Hinnom Valley outside Jerusalem. In Old Testament times, this valley was a place where child sacrifices were offered to pagan gods, specifically Molech, during the reigns of wicked kings (2 Kings 23:10, Jeremiah 32:35). Because of these abhorrent practices, it became a symbol of divine judgment and defilement. By Jesus' time, it functioned as the city dump, where refuse was constantly burned, creating a perpetual fire and stench. This cultural context provides a powerful image for the destructive, consuming nature of unrighteous speech—it is something utterly defiled and deserving of judgment, like the refuse continually burning in Gehenna.
This understanding of the tongue, “set on fire by Gehenna,” calls us to a profound awareness of the weight and consequence of our words. It challenges us to examine the origin of our speech: is it fueled by divine truth and love, or by a destructive, unholy power? When we harness the tongue for gossip, slander, or bitterness, we participate in a destructive cycle that mirrors the defilement and judgment associated with Gehenna. Therefore, discerning the source of our words and seeking to bring them under the control of the Holy Spirit becomes an essential act of worship and a safeguard for our lives and the lives of others, preventing us from becoming agents of Gehenna's destructive fire.
