Foreknowledge vs. Predestination

"House of Israel, can't I do with you as this potter?" says Yahweh. "Behold, as the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand" (Jeremiah 18:6). That image is often read as proof of unconditional, one-way determination — the potter shapes, the clay has no say. But the very next lines in the same chapter overturn that reading entirely.
Foreknowledge and predestination are logically distinct, even though they are routinely confused. Foreknowledge means God knows in advance what will happen; predestination means God determines in advance what will happen. Collapsing the two produces a God who has effectively authored every evil act in history — a conclusion Scripture never draws. Jeremiah's potter continues: "if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do to them" (Jeremiah 18:8). The potter has real power over the clay, yes — but the text shows him allowing the clay a genuine say in its own destiny. God can intend to judge a nation, yet if it repents, he relents. He can intend to bless, yet if rebellion follows, he can withhold that blessing. This same responsive pattern surfaces again at Exodus 32:14, when Moses intercedes and God relents; at 1 Chronicles 21:15, when the destroying angel is stayed mid-strike; and at Jonah 3:9-10, when Nineveh repents and the threatened judgment does not fall. None of these are isolated exceptions to a determinist rule. They are the rule.
God is not locked into his own prior intentions like a machine running a fixed program. He stays genuinely responsive to the people he made — free, deliberately, so they could actually relate to him rather than simply carry out instructions. He shapes; he also listens. "As the clay in the potter's hand" describes a relationship, not a mechanism.
