Fire Origin in Old Testament

The prophet Jeremiah brings a scathing indictment against Judah, declaring, "And they have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind." This verse reveals the horrifying practice of child sacrifice, a detestable act utterly contrary to God's character and commands. It underscores the depths of Israel's apostasy, as they adopted the vile customs of the surrounding pagan nations. The deliberate burning of their own children highlights a profound spiritual corruption and a complete disregard for the sanctity of human life. 
The Valley of Hinnom, or Gehenna, located southwest of Jerusalem, became infamous as the site of these abhorrent rituals. Originally a geographic location, its association with child sacrifice transformed it into a symbol of utter defilement and judgment in the Jewish consciousness. By Jeremiah's time, the valley was not only a place of idol worship and horrific sacrifices to foreign gods like Molech, but it was also a place where refuse and bodies of criminals were burned, contributing to its imagery of perpetual fire and decay. This historical reality rooted the future metaphorical use of Gehenna as a place of eschatological judgment and destruction within the cultural memory. 
Understanding the historical weight of Gehenna enriches our comprehension of New Testament warnings about judgment. It shapes our worship by reminding us of God's absolute holiness and His utter detestation of evil. This backdrop calls us to a high standard of discernment, ensuring our practices and beliefs are firmly rooted in His revealed will, not compromised by worldly influences. Moreover, it deepens our hope in Christ, who delivers us from the just consequences associated with sin, rescuing us from the 'Gehenna' of ultimate separation from God.
