Everyday 49: Worry and Wealth

The core teaching here is that our allegiance belongs solely to God, and both the anxiety of scarcity and the allure of wealth present rival claims to this devotion. Scripture consistently portrays faith not as a singular event, but as an ongoing, loyal commitment to God as our King. Where we place our ultimate treasure and hope reveals whom we truly serve.
Jesus directly addresses this tension in Matthew 6, stating, "You cannot serve God and money." He frames the issue as an inability to maintain loyalty to two masters, demanding singular devotion. The practice of this undivided allegiance is to "seek first the kingdom of God," prioritizing God's reign and purposes above all else. Similarly, the prayer in Proverbs for "neither poverty nor riches" is a heartfelt plea to be shielded from circumstances that could compromise this essential loyalty, whether through the temptations of abundance or the desperation of lack. Paul’s instruction in 1 Timothy further warns against placing hope "on the uncertainty of riches, but on God," underscoring that our ultimate trust must rest in Him alone.
Therefore, our approach to resources and our battles with worry are significant indicators of where our heart’s true allegiance lies. Reflect on whether your daily pursuits and concerns are rooted in trust in God, or if they subtly shift your focus toward worldly security or material gain. Let your relationship with wealth and your responses to anxiety consistently reveal a life committed to serving God alone.
