Everyday 48: Enemy Love

The teaching to "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" from Matthew 5:44, and to "overcome evil with good" from Romans 12:21, means that loving those who oppose us is a distinguishing characteristic of God's children. This love is not a prerequisite we must meet to become part of God's family, but rather it is the family resemblance, the divine nature, we display as those who already belong to the Father through Christ.
Jesus directly calls His disciples to this practice, explaining that by loving their enemies they demonstrate that they are "sons of your Father who is in heaven," as Matthew 5:45 states. Our Father "makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." This generous, non-retaliatory character of God is the model for our behavior. Likewise, Luke 6:35-36 encourages us to "be merciful, even as your Father is merciful," emphasizing that our mercy toward others, especially those who wrong us, is evidence of our belonging to the merciful Father. This love and mercy, therefore, affirms our new identity; it does not establish it. The Apostle Paul reinforces this by instructing believers, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21), a call to active allegiance that chooses not to mimic the ways of evil but instead to bear witness to God's kingdom.
Understanding this truth shapes your daily walk by reminding you that obedience to Christ's commands is not a payment for your salvation, but an expression of your devotion to the King. Your acts of love toward difficult people and your refusal to retaliate reflect the very nature of God, to whom you already belong. This perspective compels you to engage with the world not out of a desire to earn favor, but from the confidence of your established sonship, empowering you to display God's generous love and mercy to all, just as He does.
