Everyday 46: Believing Loyalty

Faith is a trustful allegiance, not merely an intellectual agreement or a detached opinion. The scripture states that "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved," which shows that saving faith involves both an inward conviction of the heart and an outward confession. This kind of belief is active and personal, extending beyond simply acknowledging facts.
The New Testament makes it clear that truly believing in Jesus involves a loyal commitment. While John 3:16 declares that "whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life," this belief is presented as more than just an intellectual assent to the existence of God or even the historical facts about Jesus. James 2:19 warns, "You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe--and shudder!" This verse highlights that even powerful spiritual beings acknowledge theological truths, yet their belief does not translate into saving faith or loyalty. Therefore, a mere intellectual acknowledgment of God's oneness or Jesus's identity, without a corresponding allegiance, is insufficient to qualify as the saving faith that Scripture describes.
This understanding of faith teaches us that God desires a holistic belief from us—one that involves our minds, hearts, and actions. Genuine faith is not something we earn through our loyalty, but rather, true saving faith will inevitably manifest as loyalty and obedience. It’s a trusting commitment that acknowledges Jesus as Lord over all aspects of our lives, leading us to confess Him openly and follow His ways. This living faith saves us and shapes our daily walk as we align our lives with the one in whom we have placed our complete trust.
