Everyday 38: Sexual Holiness

The core truth for every believer is that your body belongs to the Lord who bought you. As 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 declares, "The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord… your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit… you were bought with a price." This means your physical self is not your own to do with as you please, but rather it is consecrated to Christ.
This understanding of belonging is foundational to sexual holiness. The Apostle Paul emphasizes that the body is specifically "for the Lord," that it is a "member of Christ," and it serves as a "temple of the Holy Spirit." For early Gentile believers, this concept was clearly articulated in Acts 15:20, which instructed them to "abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality." Furthermore, the Law given to ancient Israel in Leviticus 18:24-30 demonstrates the profound seriousness of sexual disorder, warning, "Do not make yourselves unclean by any of these things… by all these the nations I am driving out before you have become unclean." This shows how sexual impurity is not just a personal matter, but it deeply impacts the covenant relationship and can even bring communal defilement.
Therefore, true Christian holiness is not a rejection or hatred of the body, but rather an active and embodied allegiance to the Lord. It is an acknowledgment that God purchased His people, redeeming both their spirits and their physical bodies, and that He gave His Holy Spirit to dwell within them. Embracing sexual holiness means living in a way that honors your divine ownership, reflecting your commitment and devotion to the One who sacrificed everything for you.
