Everyday 34: House Church

The statement that "the church is a people, not a place" means that the true essence of the church lies in the community of believers themselves, rather than in a physical building or a designated meeting spot. This is evident in New Testament passages like Romans 16:5, which says, "Greet also the church in their house," and 1 Corinthians 16:19, stating, "Aquila and Prisca, together with the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord." These verses clearly show that early Christian communities frequently gathered in individual homes, emphasizing that their identity as the church was independent of a consecrated structure.
The early believers, as depicted in the Bible, gathered in various settings, including homes and public spaces, as Acts 20:20 illustrates: "I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house." What fundamentally defined them as 'church' was their shared identity as a loyal family bound by allegiance to Jesus as King. Their sacredness stemmed from God's presence among His people, not from a particular type of building. Saving faith is understood as persevering allegiance, and it is God's grace that actively creates a people who express this loyal love in their communal life.
This understanding shapes your faith by reminding you that your belonging and spiritual identity are rooted in your relationship with God and with fellow believers, not in a location. The church, wherever you may gather, is the community of those who belong to the King, living out their new identity together.
