Everyday 32: Work and Vocation

Our work, whatever it may be, is intended to be an expression of faithful image-bearing. This means that through our daily labor, we can reflect the character and purposes of God. The very first command given to humanity in Genesis 2:15 was to "work it and keep it" in the Garden of Eden, establishing work as an integral part of our original design and purpose before sin entered the world.
This understanding of work is reinforced in the New Testament, where believers are exhorted to perform their tasks with diligence and devotion. Colossians 3:23-24 instructs us to "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men... You are serving the Lord Christ." This changes our perspective on employment and tasks, moving beyond mere productivity or worldly recognition. Furthermore, Ephesians 2:10 clarifies that "We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand," indicating that our redeemed lives are intrinsically linked to living out God's prepared good works, which includes our vocations.
Recognizing that faithful service to God extends into our professional and daily tasks transforms our understanding of work. It is not just about earning a living or achieving success; it is a profound opportunity to represent God in the ordinary aspects of life. By approaching every task as serving the Lord Christ, our work becomes a part of our faithful expression of His lordship and our unique calling to reflect His image in the world.
