Everyday 31: Money and Generosity

Christian generosity is not a transaction designed to earn favor with God; rather, it is an expression of loyalty from those who are part of Jesus’ family. We are saved by God's grace for the purpose of doing good works, and one of the primary ways our love for Christ becomes visible is through how we generously care for one another. This means that our giving stems from a renewed heart, not from a desire to gain something from God.
This understanding helps to explain the patterns of generosity shown in the Bible. In Acts 2:44-45, the early church is described as having "all things in common... selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need." This radical sharing emerged spontaneously from the deep fellowship and new life they shared in Christ, not from a requirement. Similarly, the account of Ananias in Acts 5:4 clarifies that his sin was not a failure to give his property, but rather deceit. The scripture states, "While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? ...You have not lied to man but to God." His failure was one of loyalty and truthfulness to God and his community, not a failure to comply with a demand for his property. Paul's instruction in 1 Timothy 6:17-19 further supports this, urging believers "to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share," emphasizing that this generosity should flow from a hope set on God, not as a performance to gain status or favor.
Therefore, you should understand that God is not looking for forced obedience or reluctant compliance. Instead, He desires a loyal family whose acts of generosity naturally flow from the grace they have received. Your giving, in every aspect of your life, is a direct overflow of your relationship with Christ, demonstrating a heart transformed by His love and committed to His family. You are called to a generosity that springs from genuine faith and hope in God, rather than a system of earning divine favor.
