Everyday 30: Bible Not Boring

The Bible is far from boring, but it is possible to approach its reading in a superficial way, thereby missing the profound narrative it contains. The Bible itself encourages us to seek its deeper meaning, prompting us to pray, as in Psalm 119:18, “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.” This supplication acknowledges that understanding the Bible's wonders requires divine assistance, because, as Hebrews 4:12 tells us, “The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword…” This means God’s word is not static; it is a dynamic, powerful force that penetrates and discerns the innermost parts of our being.
The apostle Paul explains that "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness," as found in 2 Timothy 3:16-17. This indicates that the Bible's purpose extends beyond the mere acquisition of facts; it is fundamentally about the transformation of God's people. Scripture teaches us that God desires a family marked by loyalty, rather than a people who offer only outward religious performance. It corrects our misconceptions by clarifying that our justification before God is by faith in Christ's completed work, not through the merit of our own actions. Furthermore, it trains us in righteousness by inviting us to see our obedience as the willing allegiance of a beloved child, rather than the forced payment of a servant. Ultimately, it equips us by revealing our true identity as new creations, fashioned for the good works that God has already prepared for us to do.
This deep engagement with Scripture is essential because it is God’s living instruction, designed to reveal His overarching plan, to correct any faulty thinking we may hold, and to systematically train a people who belong wholly to Him.
