Everyday 13: Spiritual Warfare

Spiritual warfare is best understood not as an extraordinary battle waged with visible weapons, but as ordinary faithfulness lived out under intense, unseen cosmic pressure. This means that as believers, we engage in spiritual warfare from a position of victory that has already been secured, rather than struggling in hopes of achieving it. Our fight is not to earn salvation or to win a decisive cosmic battle, but to stand firm in the triumph that Christ has already accomplished on our behalf.
The Bible teaches us that Christ Himself has fundamentally shifted the spiritual landscape. Colossians 2:15 declares, "He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him." This passage reveals that Jesus decisively defeated the spiritual powers of darkness at the cross. Therefore, when Ephesians 6:10-18 speaks of putting on "the whole armor of God," it is not for a desperate struggle to gain ground, but to enable us to "stand against the schemes of the devil" in light of a victory already won. Similarly, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 reminds us that though "we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh," and our weapons are not physical, because our true battle is one of loyalty, involving "taking every thought captive to obey Christ" who has already conquered the powers of death and darkness.
Understanding spiritual warfare in this way profoundly impacts our daily lives and faith. It means our allegiance and obedience to Christ are not merely optional, but are the very expression of our participation in His triumph. We are called to loyal witness, truthful obedience, and consistent prayer, all firmly grounded in the complete and finished work of Christ. Our confidence in facing the spiritual pressures of life comes from the certain knowledge that Christ has already prevailed, and we fight from His victory, not for our own.
