Everyday 9: Book of Life

The core teaching about the Book of Life is that it fundamentally concerns our belonging to the Lamb. This belonging is a relationship, a covenant, that defines who we are in relation to Jesus Christ, who is pictured as the slain Lamb. To have your name in this book signifies an intimate connection and identity with Him.

Revelation 3:5 states, "The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life," assuring those who persevere that their place with God is secure. In contrast, Revelation 13:8 warns that "All who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written... in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain," indicating that this belonging is profoundly linked to our loyalty and worship, distinguishing between those devoted to the Lamb and those who align with rival powers. Philippians 4:3 further reveals the practicality of this concept, where ordinary individuals who labor faithfully in the gospel are affirmed as having their "names in the book of life," demonstrating that active participation in God's work is an expression of this belonging.
Therefore, your assurance of salvation and your relationship with God are not merely abstract feelings or private beliefs. They are intimately tied to your allegiance and faithful perseverance. The presence of your name in the Book of Life is shown to be connected to your active faithfulness to the Lamb and your refusal to compromise your worship with anything else. This understanding calls you to live a life continually devoted to Christ, knowing that your enduring faithfulness reflects and confirms your covenant-belonging with Him.
