Everyday 8: Spiritual Body

The concept of a "spiritual body" referenced in 1 Corinthians 15 does not mean an immaterial, ghostly existence, but rather a body that has been transformed and empowered by the Holy Spirit. This spiritual body, as described, is fit for life in the new creation, having been raised imperishable. It stands in contrast to our current perishable, natural body, promising that we “shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.”
The foundation for understanding this transformation is found in the resurrection of Jesus Christ himself. As the "firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep," Christ’s resurrection provides the pattern for our own. His disciples initially mistook him for a ghost, but Jesus affirmed his physical reality, stating, "A spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." This physical, yet transformed, resurrection body reveals that the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead "will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit."
This truth clarifies Christian hope, emphasizing that it is not an escape from our physical bodies, but rather their ultimate restoration. Our hope is rooted in an embodied life within a renewed creation, where death, the final enemy, will be utterly destroyed. You can therefore anticipate a future where your own perishable, natural body will be raised imperishable and spiritual, mirroring the image of the risen Christ.
