Everyday 4: Why Obey After Grace?

The core truth is that "obedience is not payment. It is allegiance." This means that our actions of obedience are not a currency we use to buy God’s favor or earn our way into relationship with Him. Instead, obedience is an expression of our deep loyalty and commitment to God, an outward sign of our inner devotion and belonging.
This understanding is firmly rooted in the teachings of Jesus and His apostles. Jesus Himself declared in John 14:15, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." This reveals that love for Him naturally overflows into a desire to follow His instructions. The Apostle Paul, in Romans 6:1-14, expands on this by explaining that through grace, believers are spiritually "dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus," meaning sin no longer holds dominion over us. Our obedience, therefore, isn't an attempt to gain acceptance, but the natural way of life for those already transformed by grace. Similarly, 1 John 2:3-6 clarifies that "Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked." This passage emphasizes that our claim to know Christ is validated by living a life that mirrors His example, making allegiance visible through faithful living, not earning membership in God's family.
Therefore, our obedience after receiving grace is not a burdensome requirement or a means of acquiring salvation, but the very life of those who already belong to God’s Kingdom. This profound distinction guards against two common errors: thinking we can earn God's acceptance through our actions, or using grace as an excuse to disregard Jesus' teachings. True grace first saves us and then, in turn, shapes us into a people whose love for Christ is openly demonstrated through loyal obedience. Your actions, then, become a testament to the new life you have in Christ, not a transaction for it.
