Eschatology: Already But Not Yet
Ezekiel 34:28 offers a powerful promise: "They shall no longer be plunder for the nations, nor shall beasts of the land devour them. They shall dwell securely, and none shall make them afraid." This verse speaks to the deep longing for security and peace that God intends for His people. It paints a picture of a time when the threats from outside forces and internal struggles will be completely removed, allowing for an undisturbed existence under His protective hand. This is a divine vision of true wholeness and safety.
The understanding of this promise, like many in Scripture, operates on an "already but not yet" principle. Historically, there was a partial fulfillment when Israel returned from exile, experiencing a measure of security. More significantly, the coming of Jesus Christ ushered in the spiritual reality of this security; through Him, we are no longer plundered by sin and death, and we can dwell securely in God's grace, fearing no ultimate spiritual enemy. The Holy Spirit indwelling believers is a down payment on this promised peace, an "already" reality of God's presence and protection.
However, the complete and ultimate realization of "dwelling securely, and none shall make them afraid" awaits a future consummation. We still face challenges, temptations, and external pressures in this world. The full freedom from all fear and every threat will only be perfectly realized in God's eternal Kingdom, when all earthly evils are finally vanquished. This future hope encourages us to live faithfully in the present, knowing that God's promises are secure and His ultimate plan for our complete security and peace will surely come to pass.
