Enoch's Reputation and Role

Genesis gives Enoch four verses and one extraordinary sentence: he walked with God, and he was not, for God took him. No death is recorded.
Out of that silence grew a whole literature. In the Second Temple period Enoch becomes the man who went up - who saw the heavenly realm, was shown its workings, and was sent back with a verdict for the Watchers. Whatever we make of those books, they explain why Jude could call him a prophet and expect no argument.
His position in the genealogy matters too. Jude specifies it: the seventh from Adam. In a world that counted such things, seven marks him out.
