Edom's Judgment, Israel's Hope
Ezekiel 35:5 declares, "Because you cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, at the time of their final punishment." This passage reveals the deep-seated, unending hostility of Edom towards Israel. It was not a momentary lapse but a "perpetual enmity" that led them to actively participate in Israel's suffering during their most vulnerable time. God's judgment on Edom was a direct consequence of this enduring hatred and their violent actions, specifically their role in the bloodshed and distress that befell Israel when the nation was already undergoing divine chastisement.
The historical context is crucial for understanding this prophecy. Edom, descended from Esau, Israel's brother, harbored a long-standing animosity towards the descendants of Jacob. This animosity manifested in various ways throughout their history, culminating in their opportunistic aggression when Babylon invaded Judah. Instead of showing compassion or solidarity with their kin, Edom rejoiced in Israel's downfall and actively contributed to their suffering, even participating in the plunder and pursuing those who fled. This behavior, especially during Israel's "time of their final punishment" (the Babylonian exile), was a profound betrayal and an act of extreme malice in God's eyes. Therefore, the Lord's declaration in verse 6, "I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; because you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you," is a just and severe retribution, a mirror image of Edom's own actions.
For believers today, this judgment on Edom, while severe, carries a profound message of hope and divine justice. It reminds us that God sees and remembers every act of injustice and cruelty, especially when His people are afflicted. More importantly, Edom's downfall was a clear sign for Israel that their own period of punishment was drawing to a close. When God begins to judge the oppressors of His people, it signals that He is turning His attention back to His covenant promises for Israel. We can take comfort in knowing that even in our own times of trial and suffering, God is sovereign. He will ultimately bring justice and restoration, and He never forgets His covenant. Our hope is anchored in His faithfulness, knowing that He will reverse our fortunes and bring us into His promised future.
