Deuteronomy 32 - Cosmic Geography

The scripture from Deuteronomy 32:8-9 declares, "When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance... the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage." This means that God, referred to as the Most High, distributed the nations – the various people groups of the earth – and their territories. However, even within this global distribution, there was a specific, unique claim: the Lord’s own chosen portion was His people, identified here as Jacob, or Israel.
This passage is understood within an ancient Near Eastern worldview where deities were often associated with specific territories and peoples. The "Most High" (Elyon) was a common divine title, and its use here highlights God's supreme authority over all nations. The context of Deuteronomy 32, often called the Song of Moses, reflects on Israel's history and God's faithfulness despite their unfaithfulness. The scattering of nations and their allotment a few verses earlier points to the events at Babel (Genesis 11), understood as a divine disinheritance of seventy nations to seventy divine beings, where God intentionally set boundaries and assigned guardian spiritual authorities. Simultaneously, through His covenant with Abraham, God started building a new nation, Israel, as His personal inheritance, creating a parallel narrative of a chosen people amidst a world otherwise allotted to lesser divine beings.
