Despising God's Rod

The sword is sharpened and polished, and in the middle of the oracle comes the charge: you have despised the rod.
Heiser's gloss is about refused correction - you have despised every attempt at correction. The gesture that follows, striking the thigh, is a Middle Eastern sign of mourning or calamity.
It is worth noting that this verse is textually difficult. The Hebrew is obscure enough that the translations diverge considerably, and the sources do not resolve it or build anything on the uncertainty.
