Death is loud, but not lord

Paul is not inventing a slogan here. He is quoting the prophets. In the Old Testament picture, Sheol is the great swallower with an open throat that takes everyone down. Isaiah 25 turns that picture inside out: Yahweh swallows up death. Death, the one thing that swallows everybody, gets swallowed.
So when Paul writes that death has been swallowed up in victory, he is announcing the end of something the prophets had already been promised the end of. The conquest of the grave is not a New Testament novelty. It is an old hope, finally kept.
