Creation - Garden Vocation

The scripture in Genesis 2:15 states, "The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it." This verse explicitly tells us that humanity, represented by Adam, was placed in the Garden of Eden with a divine purpose: to labor and to preserve. This was not a passive existence but an active calling to engage with and care for the sacred space God provided.
This understanding is rooted in the biblical teaching that views the Garden of Eden as a sacred space, similar to a temple. Therefore, the work humanity was given in the garden was not merely physical labor like landscaping or gardening as we might understand it today. Instead, it was a priestly vocation, a sacred duty to serve, guard, and maintain the holy order of God's presence within that space. This highlights the profound spiritual significance of humanity's initial purpose and its role in living in direct proximity to the divine.
This ancient calling shapes our understanding of our own purpose. Just as Adam was called to serve and keep a sacred space, we too are called to embody a priestly vocation in our lives, participating in God's ongoing work in the world. Our daily tasks, whatever they may be, can be consecrated as acts of service and preservation, reflecting God's order and living with an awareness of His presence. This transforms our perspective on work and stewardship into a form of worship and holiness.
