“Glorification” Redefined

The concept of glorification in some teachings is presented as a state achievable through human effort, often understood as technological advancement or personal fulfillment. While the term "glorification" is still used, its biblical meaning is detached from the realities of sin, the atoning work of the cross, and the sanctifying process. This approach retains the desirable outcome of "glory" but removes the essential path of grace and the necessary confrontation with our fallen nature.
True glorification, as revealed in scripture, is rooted deeply in the person and work of Jesus Christ, particularly His cross. We are promised to be "heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him" (Romans 8:17). This indicates that our future glory is intricately linked to our present identification with Christ, which includes suffering. Furthermore, this transformation is not a quick fix but a continuous work of the Holy Spirit, as "we all… are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another" (2 Corinthians 3:18). Ultimately, our glorification is entirely dependent on Christ Himself, for "When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory" (Colossians 3:4).
Therefore, when you encounter teachings about glorification, it is crucial to examine whether they uphold the centrality of Christ's atoning sacrifice and the Spirit's ongoing work of transformation. Glorification without atonement becomes a form of self-improvement that lacks divine power and true spiritual depth. Authentic glory is a gracious gift from Christ, formed within those who are progressively being made to resemble Him. Your hope for future glory should rest firmly on His finished work and His indwelling presence, not on any human achievement.
