“Eternal Life” Redefined

The core truth about "eternal life" is plainly revealed in Jesus' prayer recorded in John 17:3: "And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." This declaration from Christ Himself clearly defines eternal life not merely as an unending duration of existence, but as a profound, personal knowledge of God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. It is a relationship, not simply an endless state.
Some contemporary views attempt to redefine "eternal life" as mere consciousness survival, suggesting that one's awareness continues indefinitely, perhaps through technological means or as an inherent quality of consciousness itself. However, such redefinitions, while retaining the phrase "eternal life," critically remove the relational core that Jesus establishes. The Bible consistently grounds this life in a specific person, as 1 John 5:11-12 confirms: "And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life." This demonstrates that true eternal life is solely found in having the Son of God.
Therefore, we understand that eternal life is a present reality for those in relationship with God through Christ, extending into an unbroken future. It is a gift of communion with the living God that begins now and will never end. This understanding helps us recognize that an endless state of consciousness without God is not the promise or prize offered in Scripture; in fact, such an existence would be a profound tragedy.
