“Resurrection” Redefined

The biblical teaching of resurrection describes a fundamental transformation of the human body, not its abolition. As 1 Corinthians 15:42-44 explains, “What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable… It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body.” This means that the very person who dies is raised, but in a new, imperishable, and spiritual form by God's power. It is not an escape from embodiment, but a glorious re-embodiment.
In contrast to this profound truth, certain contemporary ideas redefine "resurrection" as technological processes like digital upload, nano-medicine, or being "copied into the future." These concepts borrow the hopeful language of Christian theology and, in doing so, strip away the essential elements of a historical, bodily resurrection and the direct involvement of God. The hope these ideas offer is merely a digital replication or continuation of data, not the restoration of a unique individual by divine power. The Christian understanding is that resurrection is not a human achievement but a divine act.
Our hope for the future is anchored not in technology or human ingenuity, but in a Person, Jesus Christ, who declared in John 11:25, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live." This truth means that genuine resurrection is personal, spiritual, and God-given. It promises that the same individual identity will be raised, transformed by God's power, rather than an impersonal copy or a mere image preserved on a server.
