The Divine Council

"God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment" (Psalm 82). This verse immediately confronts us with a profound image: God, the Most High, is pictured as presiding over an assembly of other divine beings. The "sons of God" or *bene Elohim*, as mentioned in Job 1:6, are part of this celestial court, presenting themselves before the Lord, acknowledging His ultimate authority. God is actively engaged with these real, created spiritual entities, demonstrating His sovereignty over all of existence.
In contrast, counterfeit narratives, such as Gnosticism's "Pleroma" and "Aeons," often portray an inverted reality where spiritual powers, the "Archons," become agents of an evil creator. These false teachings claim that humanity is imprisoned by these forces, and even re-cast the God of the Old Testament as a malevolent figure. However, the biblical truth is that the unseen realm is not a prison controlled by a malevolent being. Colossians 1:16 clarifies this: "For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible... all things were created through him and for him." This means that every spiritual authority, "whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities," was brought into being by God through Christ. They are not emanations or rivals to His power; they are created beings, fully dependent on Him. Some of these created beings rebelled, which accounts for the presence of cosmic evil without making God its author.
Understanding this truth should deepen your faith and reshape your perspective on the invisible world. It assures you that God is not just sovereign over the physical realm but also over every spiritual power and authority. You are not trapped in a world governed by malevolent forces from which God is absent or powerless. Instead, you live within a created order firmly under the good and righteous governance of the Lord, and Christ is supremely elevated above all things visible and invisible. This knowledge offers profound security, knowing that in Christ, you are under the protection of the ultimate and good Sovereign.
