The Fall

The truth found in Scripture is that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Rom 3:23). This plainly means that humanity collectively and individually has missed the mark of God’s perfect standard, and this failure is a moral failing, not merely a lack of understanding. It is a genuine moral event that has profound consequences.
This understanding stands in stark contrast to the counterfeit idea that there is no real Fall in any moral sense. Some suggest that humanity isn't guilty, but is instead merely "evolutionarily primitive" or "ignorant of its own divinity." This view claims that "sin" is simply immaturity that one can outgrow through enlightenment, rather than a rebellion that requires forgiveness. However, the Bible teaches that in Genesis 3, humanity truly rebelled against its Creator; this was not a misunderstanding, but a deliberate turning away. As a result, "sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin" (Rom 5:12). The problem is not that we know too little, but that we have broken faith with a personal God, and the dire consequences of this rebellion are cosmic.
Recognizing the truth of the Fall fundamentally shapes our understanding of salvation. If our wound were merely ignorance, then information or enlightenment would be a sufficient fix. But because our wound is one of rebellion against the Creator, we need a Redeemer. This realization leads us to Christ, who is precisely the Redeemer God has provided to address this deep moral brokenness. Your faith is strengthened by understanding the true nature of your need, which then allows you to fully appreciate the profound gift of God's forgiveness and restoration.
