Suffering and the Cosmic War

"Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:12). Scripture never lets ordinary Christian hardship be understood in a spiritually neutral vacuum — but it is equally careful not to collapse every difficulty into a direct, identifiable demonic assault.
First Peter frames Christian baptism itself in the language of holy war: believers publicly identifying with the one who, having suffered unjustly, proclaimed victory even "to the spirits in prison," those disobedient in the days of Noah (1 Peter 3:14-22) — suffering rightly endured is cast, from the very beginning of a believer's life, as an act of allegiance in a larger conflict. Ephesians 6:12 grounds ordinary struggle explicitly within this larger cosmic conflict, naming rulers, authorities, and spiritual forces as the real backdrop against which every believer's life is lived, whether or not that backdrop is ever consciously felt. This does not mean every illness, setback, or grief has an identifiable demonic cause behind it — Scripture never licenses that kind of confident, case-by-case diagnosis, and pretending otherwise cheapens both the suffering and the conflict. It means something both more modest and more sweeping: that the entire created order remains a contested space, and no suffering, however ordinary or explicable by natural causes, is experienced entirely outside a real, if unseen, conflict that continues until its final resolution.
This reframes what it means to endure hardship faithfully. It is not merely private perseverance, unseen and unremarkable. It is participation, however small, in a conflict angels themselves are watching unfold — endurance that carries weight far beyond the immediate circumstances that seem to demand it.
