Could God Actually Lose the Cosmic War?

"Yahweh said to Satan, 'Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don't stretch out your hand.' So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh" (Job 1:12). Notice what this exchange actually shows: not a rival power negotiating from strength, but a subordinate asking permission and receiving explicit, narrow limits.
Satan is repeatedly shown operating only within boundaries granted by God, never seizing authority he does not already possess by permission. He may test Job's possessions but not his life (Job 1:12; 2:6). He may "sift" Peter only because he formally requests it (Luke 22:31), where the underlying Greek verb implies the one asking recognizes the other party's prior right to grant or withhold the request in the first place. Even at the furthest edge of the story, Revelation describes him barred from a final assault against God's people until an appointed time God himself sets. This is a war, but it was never a fair fight in the sense of two comparably matched sides — at the level of sheer strength, no creature could ever genuinely oppose an all-powerful God, so if the conflict were only about raw power, it would already be over, and always was. The real stakes are epistemic and moral: whether God's character can be vindicated through fair demonstration, not whether his power is sufficient to win.
Revelation's own picture of the final confrontation confirms this: God's enemies are not defeated after a hard-fought, uncertain battle in which the outcome hangs in the balance until the last moment. They are simply routed, "devoured by fire that came down from heaven" (Revelation 20:9-10) — an ending that was never genuinely in doubt, only delayed, patiently and deliberately, for the sake of a demonstration worth making before the whole watching cosmos.
