Ezekiel 5:5 declares, "Thus says the Lord GOD: This is Jerusalem. I have set her in the center of the nations, with countries all around her." This statement is not a literal geographical claim about Jerusalem's precise location on a map, but rather a profound theological assertion. It signifies Jerusalem's unique status and purpose in God's redemptive plan. God chose Jerusalem to be the spiritual epicenter of the world, the place from which His truth and revelation would emanate to all peoples, making it central to His cosmic design and sovereign rule.
This concept draws from the ancient Near Eastern understanding of a "cosmic mountain" – a sacred peak serving as the dwelling place of the gods, the source of life, and the axis mundi, or center of the world. While other cultures had their own cosmic mountains, for Israel, Jerusalem, and specifically the Temple Mount within it, functioned as this cosmic mountain. It was the place where heaven and earth intersected, where God's presence was uniquely manifested, and from which He governed the cosmos.
