Contend for the Faith

Jude urged his readers to "contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints," because certain "ungodly people" had crept into the church. The word "contend" (Greek: epagonizomai) implies a vigorous struggle, an earnest effort to defend something precious. This wasn't merely a suggestion but an imperative, a call to active, persistent engagement in preserving the truth of the gospel. It was about safeguarding the doctrines and practices that define genuine belief against any form of corruption or distortion.
Jude's original intent was to write about their "common salvation," a more general letter of encouragement and teaching. However, the emergence of false teachers within the Christian community necessitated a shift in focus. This wasn't an abstract theological debate but a pressing pastoral concern, as these individuals were actively undermining the faith and morality of believers. The concept of "faith once for all delivered" emphasizes the completeness and finality of God's revelation in Christ, contrasting it with any new or modified doctrines introduced by heretics. Today, we are likewise called to discern and to defend the core tenets of our faith. This contending isn't always marked by public debate but often manifests in how we live, speak, and choose what we consume. It means consistently aligning our lives with biblical truth, recognizing that compromise on fundamental doctrines can lead to spiritual drift. Our earnest contention for the faith translates into a commitment to sound teaching, a life of holiness, and a loving but firm resistance to anything that diminishes the glory of Christ or distorts His salvation. We contend not out of aggression, but out of devotion to God and love for His people, ensuring the pure gospel continues to shine.
