The Powers: Disarmed Yet Still Active

"Our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:12). If the powers were truly disarmed at the cross, why does the New Testament keep describing them as active and dangerous long after it?
Because the disarming Paul describes in Colossians 2:15 is a legal and judicial defeat, not yet a total, final destruction — and the New Testament holds both truths together without contradiction. The powers are publicly delegitimized, their claim against humanity nailed to the very cross meant to condemn it, yet they remain, in the present age, apparently still working against Christ and against his people, still requiring believers to stand firm rather than assume the conflict is already over. This is confirmed by Paul's own choice of words: the rare verb translated "stripped" in Colossians 2:15 occurs only one other time anywhere in the New Testament, describing believers "stripping off" their old self (Colossians 3:9) — language of removal and public exposure, not instant annihilation. A defeated enemy stripped of rank and insignia can still, for a time, hold a knife.
This is the "already, not yet" pattern running through the whole New Testament's account of Christ's victory: already legally disarmed and stripped of standing before God's court, not yet finally and physically destroyed from the world altogether. Believers are told to struggle against real, though delegitimized, spiritual opposition precisely because the war has been judicially decided at the cross even while its last skirmishes continue on into the present age. The verdict is in, signed and sealed at Calvary. The final execution of that verdict, the moment the sentence is actually carried out in full, is still to come.
