Christ Disarms the Powers at the Cross

"Having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it" (Colossians 2:15). This single sentence describes one of the most decisive events in the entire Bible, and its Greek vocabulary is worth slowing down for.
The verb translated "stripped," *apekdyomai*, carries the vivid sense of stripping someone of what they are wearing — as though the cosmic powers hostile to God were enemy commanders, publicly stripped of rank and insignia before a watching crowd. The word rendered "triumphing," *thriambeuo*, is the technical term for a Roman military triumph, the formal victory procession in which a conquering general paraded his defeated enemies through the streets in chains for all to see, stripped of armor and dignity alike. Paul is not reaching for poetic exaggeration; he is using the precise vocabulary of imperial spectacle, instantly recognizable to a first-century audience, to describe what actually happened at the cross. The verse just before it supplies the missing piece: "the record of debt... nailed to the cross" (Colossians 2:14), an image drawn from the Roman practice of nailing a condemned criminal's written charge to the instrument of his own execution. Paul reimagines that charge as the cosmic legal claim hostile powers held against humanity — now nailed not to humanity's condemnation, but to the very cross that becomes, in the same act, Christ's own enthronement and transfer of his people "into the Kingdom of the Son of his love" (Colossians 1:13).
What looked, on Good Friday, like total defeat was in fact a triumphal procession the powers of this world never saw coming — their own legal claim against humanity turned, at the last moment, into the very instrument of their public disarming.
