Unseen Realm 12: Deuteronomy 32:8 Sons Of God

Deuteronomy 32:8-9 states, "When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. But the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage." This passage reveals that after humanity was divided and nations were formed, the Most High sovereignly assigned them their territories. Critically, while other nations were allotted under the care of heavenly beings—often understood as divine agents or angelic powers—the Lord himself uniquely chose Israel, the descendants of Jacob, as His personal inheritance and special portion. This establishes a profound distinction in God's relationship with humanity, setting aside one people for a singular covenantal bond.
This understanding of the nations' origins and oversight is deeply rooted in the events described in Genesis 11:1-9, commonly known as the Tower of Babel. There, human rebellion led to divine judgment where "the LORD confused the language of all the earth. And from there the LORD dispersed them over the face of all the earth." This dispersion resulted in the formation of distinct linguistic and territorial groups. Deuteronomy 32 offers a theological explanation for what happened next, indicating that after the confusion at Babel, God appointed various divine beings to oversee these newly formed Gentile nations. However, in stark contrast, God chose to establish a direct, exclusive covenant relationship with Israel, making them His direct "allotted heritage." This framework helps explain the backdrop against which Israel’s unique role in salvation history would unfold.
The theological implication is that God's plan of redemption for all humanity begins with His election of Israel.
