Mount Zion: Yahweh's Cosmic Throne

Psalm 48 calls Mount Zion the heights of the north. Look at a map and that is simply wrong. Jerusalem is in Judah, in the south.
The phrase is borrowed. The heights of the north was Baal's mountain, his address in Canaanite religion. The psalmist takes the title off him and hands it to Yahweh.
That is not careless geography. It is a deliberate claim - the mountain that matters, the one the nations will stream toward, belongs to Israel's God and not to Baal.
