Yahweh's Supremacy: Beyond Other Gods

The biblical writers call Yahweh el elyon - God Most High. Those titles, el and elyon, were not coined for him. They were already in circulation, attached to other gods.
Using them was the point. Assigning those names to Yahweh was not an endorsement of Phoenician theology, it was a takeover. He is incomparable among spiritual beings, and the others are pretenders.
Ezekiel 28 shows what happens when someone forgets the ranking. The prince of Tyre says he is a god, seated in the seat of gods. The reply is close to sarcasm: will you still say I am a god, in the presence of the one who kills you?
