The Burning Bush Reveals Two Yahwehs

The account of the burning bush in Exodus 3:2 states that "the angel of Yahweh appeared to him in a flame of fire... from a bush." Yet, verse 4 then recounts that Yahweh Himself calls to Moses "from the midst of the bush." This reveals a fascinating interaction where both the Angel of Yahweh and Yahweh are present and speaking from the very same location. This detail suggests a profound connection between these two divine figures, indicating a relationship beyond a simple messenger.
The New Testament provides further clarity through Stephen's speech in Acts 7:30-35, where he twice references an angel in the bush. This New Testament affirmation, alongside the Exodus narrative, shows that scriptural writers consistently portray a dual divine presence at the burning bush. One aspect of this divine presence is visible, identified as the Angel, while the other is the invisible, transcendent God. This deliberate portrayal in scripture points to an intentional understanding of two distinct, yet intimately connected, manifestations of the divine.
This theological insight encourages us to consider the profound depth of God’s nature, revealing an ancient understanding of a multi-personal Godhead even in the Old Testament. It challenges a limited view of God as exclusively invisible or distant, instead inviting us to recognize that God actively manifests His presence in human history. This visible manifestation, particularly in the figure of the Angel of Yahweh, foreshadows the ultimate Incarnation, where God became visible in the person of Jesus, who is the visible image of the invisible God.
