Cosmic Conflict: The Defeat of Hostile Divine Powers

Isaiah says that on that day the Lord will punish the host of heaven in heaven, and the kings of the earth on the earth. Both, in the same sentence.
Then comes the detail that surprises people. They will be gathered together and shut up in a prison, and after many days punished. Judgment on the rebel powers comes in two stages - confinement first, sentence later.
Psalm 82 belongs in the same file. God sentences the gods of the nations to die like men.
One qualification the sources insist on: this demise is in process, not complete. The powers have been sentenced and their authority delegitimised. They have not yet been cleared away.
