The North: Source of Sinister Supernatural Opposition

When Ezekiel says Gog comes from the uttermost parts of the north, he is not giving a compass bearing.
Tsaphon, the north, was Baal's mountain - the address of the storm god, and the root of the title that reaches the New Testament as Beelzebul. In the Bible the northern country is where hostile supernatural power is imagined to live. Bashan and Mount Hermon sit on that northern boundary and carry Rephaim and underworld associations of their own.
So the invasion from the north is a theological direction before it is a military one. An ancient reader feared the north for reasons that had nothing to do with cavalry.
